As Mkono marked its 5th anniversary on July 7, we’re filled with excitement and gratitude as we reflect on our journey of empowering entrepreneurs across Kenya. Since our founding in 2019, our mission has been consistent: to build a supportive global ecosystem where entrepreneurs thrive through accessible loans, mentorship, and community partnerships. Today, we look back on how this mission has translated into tangible impact over the years. The Challenge We Tackle In Kenya, over 50% of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) struggle to access affordable capital, often due to high interest rates from traditional lenders. Moreover, many lack the necessary support networks for entrepreneurship learning and growth. Since the beginning, we have collaborated closely with local incubators and accelerators to identify entrepreneurs with high potential impact, ensuring our services reach those who can benefit most. In 2023, we notably welcomed the Rotary Club of Kikuyu and Sote Hub to our partnership hub. Our First Pilots in 2019 Were Successful In Empowering Entrepreneurs Through the Global Coronavirus Pandemic Our journey began with a successful pilot launched just just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, Mkono supported 30 entrepreneurs with 24 loans totaling $20,000 CAD. Using these funds, our entrepreneurs were able to improve cash flow and invest in critical areas like equipment and workforce, all while receiving mentorship to adapt to the pandemic’s challenges. 👉 Our 5th Year Fundraising Campaign is live until August 9th. Every dollar counts. Help us reach our goal of $15,000 CAD! Celebrating Entrepreneurial Success and Cultivating a Supportive Community The entrepreneurs we support are at the heart of our mission. We support them through every stage of growth, aiming for lasting, sustainable impact. Since our establishment in 2019, we've assisted 97 entrepreneurs, disbursed 94 loans totaling over $80,000 CAD, and conducted 111 mentorship sessions. One notable success story is Alexis from Kakia Oils, a local plant-based skincare company. With our support, she invested in packaging, covered local business association fees, and acquired advanced production equipment. Since joining Mkono, her annual revenue has skyrocketed by over 550%! Our impact extends beyond individual entrepreneurs. We're dedicated to empowering those who bring positive change to their communities. Carolyne, for instance, founded Candi Fresh Kenya, a social enterprise providing safe and affordable street food. Beyond addressing industry challenges, her initiative has created more than 80 new youth employment opportunities. Community Support Driving Change None of this would be possible without the support of our generous community. To date, we've raised over $80,000 CAD solely through community donations. Notably, our entry into GlobalGiving as a permanent member was made possible by the success of our 2021 GlobalGiving Accelerator Campaign, where we raised over $20,000. Every donation, regardless of size, plays a vital role in empowering our entrepreneurs, as 40% of our loans are under $500 CAD.
Join us in celebrating our milestones, and together, let's empower even more entrepreneurs to thrive. Whether through donations, partnerships, or simply spreading the word, your support makes a tangible difference. Here's to the next five years of impact and innovation at Mkono!
